Bayern Munich were simply as excellent as advertised, Barcelona played their worst video game ever, and the Blaugrana are out of the Champions League thanks to an 8-2 loss in Lisbon. Bayern took apart Barça from start to complete, making it look easy versus a helpless and hopeless group.
HALF
The tone was set from the extremely first minute: Bayern were going to push high with amazing strength, and Barça revealed from the jump they were not capable to handle journalism and constantly gave the ball away to the most unsafe attacking players in Europe right now.
And Bayern capitalized. First Thomas Müller, then after a quick break for a David Alaba own goal that gave Barça fans some expect about 5 minutes, the onslaught continued: Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry and Müller once again made it 4-1 to the Germans in simply 30 minutes, and the video game was over just like that.
Barça showed no battle and had absolutely no imagination with the ball, and the midfield kept providing the ball away time and time once again. As we approached halftime Bayern chose to drop their strength as they understood the video game was over, but they still handled to produce opportunities thanks to Barças stupidity.
At halftime, the Blaugrana had actually just played the worst 45 minutes in club history, and the season was over. Could they in some way preserve ones honor and reveal some fight and dignity in the second half?
2ND HALF
Barça made a solid start to the 2nd half with much better pressing and an objective by Luis Suárez that offered them some sort of hope, but the bad defending continued and Bayern quickly made it a three-goal game once again thanks to an amazing run by Alphonso Davies and an easy tap-in for Joshua Kimmich.
The rating was 5-2 with 30 minutes to go, and Bayern finally decided to let and show some grace Barça have the ball for a little bit. The Blaugrana were so awful on the night that they continued to lose it in bad positions, and Bayern scored THREE goals in the final 10 minutes: Lewandowski got his with a totally free header in the six-yard box, and Barça loanee Philippe Coutinho scored twice to make all of this even worse even worse.
The last whistle mercifully came, and Barcelonas season is over in genuinely unpleasant fashion. This is difficult to take. This will harm for a long period of time.
